Uganda Visa Requirements for Tourists (2026 Guide)

Everything you need to know about getting into Uganda in 2026 — visa types, costs, application steps, yellow fever requirements, and the East Africa Tourist Visa that covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda in one permit. Updated and verified by Invictus Safaris.

Planning a Uganda Safari? Read This Before You Fly

Every year, travelers planning a Uganda safari spend weeks researching gorilla permits, lodges, and itineraries, only to realize at the last minute that they are unsure about visa requirements and entry documents.

The good news is that entering Uganda is generally straightforward. But there are a few important details that catch travelers off guard every single year.

This guide explains:

  • Uganda visa requirements,
  • the best visa option for safari travelers,
  • yellow fever regulations,
  • and the documents you must carry when arriving at Entebbe International Airport.

At Invictus Safaris Limited, we help travelers prepare for Uganda safaris every day, including gorilla trekking tours, wildlife safaris, and cross-border East Africa itineraries.

Uganda Visa Options Explained

Uganda currently offers three main visa options for international travelers.

1. Uganda E-Visa (Recommended Option)

For most travelers, the Uganda e-Visa is the easiest and safest option.

You apply online before travel and receive an approval document by email to present upon arrival.

Uganda E-Visa Details

  • Cost: $50 USD
  • Processing time: 3–5 business days
  • Application portal: Uganda Immigration Portal
  • Recommended application time: at least 2 weeks before travel

Why We Recommend It

  • No airport queues
  • No cash handling at immigration
  • Faster arrival process
  • Less stress after long international flights

“The e-Visa removes almost every unnecessary complication from your arrival experience.”

2. East Africa Tourist Visa (Best for Multi-Country Trips)

If your itinerary includes:

  • Uganda,
  • Rwanda,
  • or Kenya,

the East Africa Tourist Visa is often the best value.

This visa allows multiple entries between the three countries using a single permit.

East Africa Tourist Visa Details

Ideal For

  • Gorilla trekking combinations
  • Rwanda-Uganda safari circuits
  • East African overland travel

Many Invictus Safaris Uganda safari packages combine multiple East African destinations, making this option especially useful.

3. Visa on Arrival (Not Recommended)

Uganda still offers visas on arrival for many nationalities, but we generally advise travelers to avoid this option if possible.

Common Problems

  • Long immigration queues
  • Cash-only payment requirements
  • Possible delays after long flights
  • Exchange rate confusion

Visa on Arrival Cost

  • $50 USD
  • Exact USD cash is strongly recommended

The e-Visa costs the same and creates a smoother arrival process.

The One Document Travelers Forget Most Often

Your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

Uganda requires all arriving travelers to present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate — commonly called the “yellow card.”

This requirement applies regardless of:

  • your nationality,
  • where you are flying from,
  • or how short your visit is.

Important Yellow Fever Rules

  • Vaccination must be taken at least 10 days before travel
  • One dose provides lifetime protection
  • The physical yellow card should be carried during travel

“No yellow fever certificate can mean denied entry at the border.”

If you lost your certificate, contact your vaccination clinic before departure to request a replacement.

Uganda Entry Requirements Checklist

Before flying to Uganda, carry the following:

Required Documents

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Uganda e-Visa approval document
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Accommodation confirmation
  • Some USD cash for emergencies

Your Invictus Safaris booking confirmation is acceptable proof of accommodation for immigration purposes.

Important: Gorilla Permits Are NOT Entry Visas

This is one of the most common misunderstandings among first-time safari travelers.

A Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking permit is completely separate from your entry visa.

Gorilla Permit Facts

  • Current permit cost: $800 USD
  • Issued by: Uganda Wildlife Authority
  • Required for all gorilla trekking activities

You still need:

  • a valid visa,
  • passport,
  • and yellow fever certificate.

At Invictus Safaris, we handle gorilla permit reservations for all clients as part of our safari planning service.
